CRITICAL QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT THE MEDIA

Here are some general questions that we can ask ourselves when looking at any media text in order to determine what we think of the messages that the producer of the text is trying to send us.

AUTHOR
Who is the author, or who is responsible for the text? What makes this person an expert in this area?

PURPOSE
What is the purpose of this text? Is it trying to inform, entertain, persuade, or sell something?

ACCURACY
Is the information accurate or reliable? Do the authors provide any evidence to support their conclusions?

OBJECTIVITY
Is the information objective, or do you think the author has a bias or opinion about the topic?

ORGANIZATION
Is the information presented clearly, or is it confusing? Is there good grammar and/or spelling? How current is the information?
