WHY DOES MEDIA MATTER TO ME?

In today's world, media is literally everywhere. When someone mentions the word media, you might first think of a television news report or an article from your local newspaper as examples of two different types of media. You would be correct in thinking this because media is a way to communicate or relay information. But media is more than just a TV news report or a newspaper article because information is constantly being relayed to us in ways we don't even think about! Media is a popular radio song (or not so popular song), a book, a billboard, a rock video, a cartoon, a fairy tale, a soap opera, a fitness magazine, the latest fashion trend, an internet website, a painting, a photograph, a talk show, junk mail, a scary movie, an advertisement, etc. And because media is everywhere, even when we aren't really thinking about it, media has the ability to shape the way that we relate to and interact with the world. Our opinions or lack of opinions about politics are influenced by media, the music that we choose to like or dislike is influenced by media, the clothes that we wear or the latest diet that we might try out is influenced by media, what kind of car we want to drive is influenced by media, where we might like to take our "dream vacation" is influenced by media. Therefore, if you become more aware of where media is, or in other words, what type of information you receive in your everyday world, you will have a better ability to organize your thoughts, opinions, and choices in order to make more informed decisions about your life.
