MEDIA LOG

For this activity, you will be exploring your relationship with media. First, brainstorm a list of everything you remember listening to (cd's, radio, music videos); reading (print, Internet); and watching (movies, videos, television) the previous day. Remember, media is a way to convey messages. Now, estimate the amount of time you spend each day with media. Do you think the media you experience is representative of people like you? What are the benefits of spending this amount of time with media? What are the possible problems? What kind of an impact do you think media has on your life?

In order to get a better idea of how much time you spend with media, keep a media log for the next week. You will eventually figure out the percentage of waking time you spend exposed to media that week. We can then figure out the percentages spent on different kinds of media. You will then be able to predict how many hours a year you spend with different kinds of media.

Here are some follow up discussion questions to be answered after you have kept your media log for the week: Areyou surprised by the numbers? Is your experience similar to other students? Do you engage with media more or less now than in the past? Is there anything you want to change about your engagement with media?
